Description: Jamie Adams is the first national park ranger for the Stonewall National Monument in New York City. It was the scene of the 1969 Stonewall riots following a police raid, which marked a shift in the struggle for gay rights. Adams is a queer woman and a third-generation military veteran who served under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Under this measure, which was abolished in 2011, servicemen and servicewomen could remain in the military if they didn't openly declare their sexual orientation. Even after Adams left the military, "don't ask, don't tell" haunted her while she worked as a civilian, handing new recruits the contracts that required LGBTQ members to stay in the closet.
